Atlanta Surgeon L. Thomas Winger IV, M.D., FACS

Originally from Denver, Colorado, Dr. Winger was raised throughout the South and West, as well as Europe, having lived in the U.K. and Spain. A National Merit Scholar, Dr. Winger graduated cum laude from Rice University in Houston, Texas in 1996 with a dual major in Biology and Spanish Linguistics. He received his medical degree from the University of Texas in Houston. Since 2000, he has called Georgia home, embarking on general surgery residency at Emory University School of Medicine in that year. After completing his chief residency at Emory in 2005, he joined Fayette Surgical Associates at Piedmont Fayette Hospital, which became the Fayette Surgical Division of North Atlanta Surgical Associates in 2008.

Board-certified in General Surgery, Dr. Winger served as a NASA board member for several years, and has maintained his academic background by helping to train new surgeons as a Surgical Attending for surgical residents in the Atlanta Medical Center program during their Fayetteville rotation. He remains active in hospital leadership as the Chief of the General Surgery department at Piedmont Fayette Hospital, the Cancer Liaison Physician for the hospital, as well as the General Surgeon representative for the multidisciplinary tumor board conferences.

Treatment of cancers, particularly those of the colon and thyroid, remains a primary interest for Dr. Winger, allowing him to draw on the experience and training he received at Emory University. He also maintains a very active general surgical practice, ranging from advanced laparopscopic ventral hernia repair and open abdominal wall reconstructions for complex hernias to surgery of the gallbladder and parathyroid. He finds his Spanish fluency an additional adjunct, allowing him to communicate with a growing population of patients who hail from Central and South America.

When not in the hospital, Dr. Winger enjoys running 10- and 15-k, playing golf and piano, travelling and spending time with loved ones.
