Atlanta surgeon George W. Shaak M.D.
Background
Born in 1959 in Metairie, Louisiana, Dr. George Shaak graduated summa cum laude from Jesuit High School in New Orleans in 1977. He attended and graduated cum laude from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge in 1980. He earned his Doctor of Medicine at Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans in 1984. Dr. Shaak completed his General Surgery residency at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock, Arkansas.
Dr. Shaak is board certified in General Surgery and has done additional training in advanced laparoscopic techniques. He has also done additional training in breast ultrasound and ultrasound guided breast core needle biopsy techniques. A breast ultrasound in the office frequently allows him to diagnose and biopsy breast lumps or masses found on exam or mammogram without having to refer patients to a hospital.
Upon completion of his General Surgery residency, Dr. Shaak joined Jackson Surgical Group, the oldest private practice surgical group in Jackson, Mississippi. He practiced in Jackson, Mississippi from 1989 to 1995. While in Mississippi, he served as chief of surgery at both Rankin Medical Center and River Oaks Hospital. In 1995 Dr. Shaak relocated to Atlanta, Georgia and has been on active staff in the department of General Surgery at Northside Hospital and St. Joseph’s hospital since his arrival. At Northside Hospital, he has served as chief of general surgery, vice-chief of surgery, and chief of surgery. He is presently the medical director of the Surgical Quality Improvement Project at Northside Hospital.
Dr. Shaak is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is also a member of the Georgia Surgical Society, the Atlanta Surgical Society, Georgia Medical Association, and the Southeastern Surgical Congress.
Dr. Shaak is married to Charlotte Black Shaak, with whom he has two sons. He is an avid runner having completed the Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Marine Corps, Nashville, and New York Marathons. He also runs the Peachtree Road Race yearly. He enjoys most outdoor activities, including tennis, hiking, and skiing. He also enjoys reading, particularly books on American history.
